Winter Weather Reminders About School Closures and FLEX Days

November 22, 2022

We would like to share with you how Lakeville Area Schools will communicate if school is delayed, must close early, or is canceled. This information can also be found at:

School, programs and activities may be closed and/or canceled by the Superintendent in the event of extreme weather conditions. Upon a decision to close, delay school or dismiss early, all families will receive a phone call, text message and email to the emergency contact listed in their Parent Portal.

School closings will also be posted on the District website at and on the District’s Facebook page @LakevilleAreaSchools, Twitter page @LakevilleAreaPS and Instagram page @LakevilleAreaSchools. An official announcement will be made on TV stations WCCO (Channel 4), KSTP (Channel 5), KMSP (Channel 9) and KARE (Channel 11).

On days when school is canceled because of bad weather, Lakeville Area Schools may implement Flexible Learning Days, or “FLEX Days,” for students in Kindergarten through Grade 12. On a FLEX Day, K-12 students will complete learning activities from home instead of coming into their school building. The first snow day of the school year will not be a FLEX Day. The Superintendent may call a FLEX Day after the first snow day.

The benefits of FLEX Days include keeping everyone safe and off the roads when the conditions are poor, allowing for learning to continue when school is closed due to weather. Additionally, FLEX days make it more likely that the District will not have to schedule make-up days during the school year or add days to the end of the school year due to inclement weather.

On FLEX Days school will run on a 2 hour late start schedule. At the elementary level, students will use FLEX Day choice cards to guide their learning day. These cards are provided by the classroom teacher and are posted on your school’s website. At the secondary level, students will utilize learning in Schoology. There are no K-12 required synchronous live classes with a teacher in a virtual classroom. Your school will communicate expectations clearly in the event of a FLEX Day. Please note, our district is currently looking at ways to offer real-time online learning opportunities in the future when unexpected closures occur.

When adverse conditions exist, please know buses may run late at times. Parents are advised to make provisions for the care of their children in the event of a school closing, late start or early dismissal.
