Voters Approve Lakeville Area Schools Request for New Elementary School

May 11, 2021

Two girls and text that reads Voters Pass ReferendumVoters in the Lakeville Area School district approved a $43.975 million bond request to build and equip a new elementary school, including the purchase of land. The vote was 53% yes to 47% no (unofficial results: 2,581 yes votes, 2,255 no votes).

The referendum request was in response to current and projected enrollment growth, with 1,000 more elementary students expected in the next five years. While the district’s student enrollment is projected to grow more than 20% in the next decade, elementary enrollment is projected to grow 20% in just the next five years. People continue to move into the district; in fact, Lakeville continues to be the fastest growing city in Minnesota based on the number of residential building permits issued.

Next steps include:

  • Identifying land appropriate for an elementary school, and located in one of the areas where growth is occurring.
  • Beginning the construction planning process as soon as possible. This will include work with the architectural team, staff and community members to develop design priorities and space needs.
  • Construction would begin in summer 2022, with the elementary school opening in fall 2024.

“We are incredibly grateful for our community’s support and understanding of our growth needs,” said Superintendent Michael Baumann. “While our students are the primary beneficiaries of this vote, our entire community benefits when our schools remain strong.”

The district will continue to keep the community informed as plans unfold. More information can be found at
