Lakeville Pathways Academy teachers present at Minnesota English Learner Education Conference
November 28, 2023
On Friday, November 17, Lakeville Pathways Academy teachers Erin Mulvany-Mankowski and Ben Rydberg gave a presentation on the struggles and successes of working with multilingual learners in an alternative high school setting at the Minnesota English Learner Education Conference (MELEd).
Mulvany-Mankowski and Rydberg’s presentation, “Struggles and Successes of Working with Multilingual Learners in Alternative Education,” focused on the experiences staff at Lakeville Pathways Academy encountered while working with multilingual students during the 2022-2023 school year and the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year. The presentation highlighted the collaboration among teachers to better support students.
“When Ben asked me if I would like to present with him at the conference, I thought that it would be a wonderful opportunity for us to share the strength of our collaborative team,” said Mulvany-Mankowski. “We were able to share our strengths and strategies, which had an impact on many of the attendees.”
After the presentation, individuals attending the session had the opportunity to talk about what they are seeing in their worksites and how they can support one another.
“It was a great opportunity to speak with other EL teachers in alternative education and to have a conversation around what we're doing in Lakeville, as well as gather input from other districts,” said Rydberg. “This allowed us to advocate and create a small network to collaborate on a topic that does not receive much attention at most conferences.”
