How Decisions Are Made
Student and staff safety is our primary concern.
As a general rule, schools will be canceled or delayed if the air temperature is -25 degrees Fahrenheit or colder or the wind chill is -35 degrees Fahrenheit or colder.
Day-of-school weather decisions will be announced by 6 a.m.
Decisions regarding evening Community Education programs, co-curricular sports and activities and facility use by community groups will be determined by 1 p.m. and communicated as early as possible.
Other Reminders
- Parents/caregivers are advised to make plans for the care of their children in the event of a school closing, late start or early dismissal.
- When adverse weather conditions exist, buses may run late. Most buses can be tracked using the Here Comes the Bus app. Parents/caregivers should be sure children dress appropriately for the weather during these exceptionally cold days.
- Ultimately, the decision to send children to school remains with families. Parents/guardians wishing to keep their children home if they feel weather conditions are unsafe should report the absence to their school so it may be considered as excused. Lakeville Area Schools supports those decisions that are made for the safety and health of students. There are no negative consequences, and our schools work with families to assure that work is made up when an absence is safety-related.
Flex Days
After the first “snow day” of the school year, the Superintendent may call a Flexible Learning Day (Flex Day) for K-12 students and early childhood special education students. On Flex Days, students will continue to learn from home by checking in with their class via Webex, and completing assignments given by their teachers.
The notification methods listed above will indicate whether the day will be a Flex Day or a typical snow day. Please visit the Flex Days webpage to review student expectations.
