Engage Students, One Medical Mystery at a Time
Vision: Create an inclusive environment that prepares students to excel in STEM fields of study in order to be innovators in an evolving society.
Mission: The Lakeville North STEM Biomedical Science Program will provide students with opportunities to develop critical thinking skills, creativity, collaboration, and communication for post-secondary and future readiness.
The STEM Biomedical Science Program at Lakeville North High School offers three courses that follow a proven, hands-on, real-world, problem-solving approach to learning. Students explore the concepts of human medicine and are introduced to topics such as physiology, genetics, microbiology and public health.
Through activities like dissecting a heart, students play the role of biomedical professionals and examine the process, structures and interactions of the human body. Students will learn skills and techniques currently used in the fields of biomedical science.
The program is part of Project Lead the Way, which has set the highest standards for rigorous, focused, and engaging study to develop students’ innovative, collaborative, cooperative, and problem-solving skills.
About STEM Biomedical Science

Overview
The STEM Biomedical Sciences program offers students an array of advantages, from career readiness and hands-on experience to college preparatory-level classes, labs and creative exercises. Students succeed in the classroom and in their career pathway in the real-world.
Starting in 10th grade, students can take any of the three courses aligned with the national learning science standards. Courses can be taken in any order.
Any student who is interested in becoming college-ready in the field of medicine should join the program. These courses encourage students to apply math and science knowledge to hands-on skills that are used in the field.
Upon successful completion of each course and the End of Course Exam, students can receive Articulated credit with MnSCU schools and Transcripted college credit.
Special thanks to our business partners for supporting our students to be career and college ready: Minnesota Masonic Homes, Dr. Emily Pike, Dr. Couillard, Northfield Hospital, Snyder Orthodontics, and Fairview Ridges Hospital.

Course Descriptions
Honors Principles of Biomedical Science
Students investigate various health conditions and the factors that led to the death of a fictional person. Students investigate lifestyle choice and medical treatments that might prolong life. This course is designed to provide an overview of all the courses in the program.
Honors Human Body System
Students examine the interactions of human body systems as they explore identity, power, movement, protection and homeostasis. Students design experiments to investigate the structures and functions of the human body, and will build organs and tissues on manikins. Students work through real-world cases and play the role of bio- medical professionals to solve medical mysteries.
Honors Medical Interventions
Students investigate a variety of interventions involved in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. The course is a “how to” manual for maintaining overall health and homeostasis in the body. Students explore how to prevent and fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; prevent, diagnose and treat cancer; and prevail when organs begin to fail. Students are exposed to a range of interventions related to pharmacology, medical devices and diagnostics.
