Standard Response Protocol (SRP)

Our district has adopted The “I Love U Guys” Foundation’s Standard Response Protocol (SRP). Students and staff train, practice, and drill this protocol regularly.

Common Language

The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) utilizes clear common language while allowing for flexibility in protocol. The premise is simple - there are five specific actions that can be performed during an incident: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter.

HOLD — In Your Classroom or Area

Used when:

Medical issue, hazard, or altercation in the hallway, etc.

Students are trained to:

Clear the hallways and remain in their area or room until “All Clear” is announced
Do business as usual

Adults and staff are trained to:

Close and lock the door
Account for students and adults
Do business as usual

Parent/Caregiver role:

No action is required. The school will communicate to let you know if a hold occurred.

SECURE — Get Inside. Lock outside doors

Used when:

Threat or hazard in the area, such as violent/criminal activity, dangerous animal, etc.

Students are trained to:

Return to inside of building
Do business as usual

Adults and staff are trained to:

Bring everyone indoors
Lock the outside doors
Increase situational awareness
Account for students and adults
Do business as usual

Parent/Caregiver role:

Should parents come to the school during a secure event?

No, unless otherwise notified by the school. Every effort is made to conduct classes as normal during a secure event. Additionally, parents may be asked to stay outside during a Secure event.

What if parents need to pick up their student?

Depending on the situation, it may not be safe to release the student. As the situation evolves, Secure might change to a Monitored Entry and/or Controlled Release. The school will communicate instructions for pick up in this case.

Will parents be notified when the school goes into a secure?

When a secure event is brief or the hazard is non-violent, like a wild animal on the playground, there may not be a need to notify parents while the Secure is in place, but will communicate afterwards. With longer or more dangerous events, the school will notify parents that the school has increased their security, and provide any instructions specific to the situation.

LOCKDOWN — Locks, Lights, Out of Sight

Used when:

A Lockdown is only initiated when there is an active threat inside or very close to the building.

Students are trained to:

Move away from sight
Maintain silence
Do not open the door
Follow directions from staff

Adults and staff are trained to:

Recover students from hallway
Close and secure the classroom door
Activate the police button
Turn out lights and move to safe space
Follow Instructions from admin/police

Parent/Caregiver role:

Should parents come to or contact the school during a lockdown?

We recognize that it is a natural inclination for parents to go to the school during a Lockdown, however we ask that you do not come to the school or attempt to contact the school. If there is a threat inside the building, law enforcement will be responding. It is unlikely that parents will be granted access to the building or even the campus. If parents are already in the school, they will be instructed to Lockdown as well. School staff will be responding to the lockdown and will not be able to take your phone call. The school/district will communicate as quickly as possible to share information and instructions.

Should parents call or text their students during a lockdown?

The school recognizes the importance of communication between parents and students during a Lockdown event. Parents should be aware though, during the initial period of a Lockdown, it may not be safe for students to text or call their parents. As the situation resolves, students may be asked to update their parents on a regular basis. In some cases, students may be evacuated and transported off-site for a student-parent reunification.

EVACUATE — Go to the designated location

Used when:

Fire, mechanical failure that cannot be resolved quickly, (i.e. power outage, gas leak), bomb threat, etc.

Students are trained to:

Leave belongings behind
If possible, bring your phone
Follow directions from staff

Adults and staff are trained to:

Lead students to Evacuation location
Account for students and adults
Notify if missing, extra or injured students and adults

Parent/Caregiver role:

If an evacuation is required, the school will communicate as quickly as possible with information and instructions for parents.

SHELTER — Tornado/Severe weather protocol

Used when:

Severe weather

Students are trained to:

Follow directions from staff
Move to shelter area with staff / class

Adults and staff are trained to:

Lead safety strategy and relocate to shelter
Account for students and adults
Notify admin with any missing, extra or injured students or adults

Parent/Caregiver role:

No action is required of parents. The school will communicate to let you know if a shelter occurred.
