Creating an Application
Introduction
Most 4-year college applications have 5 key components: general student information, student involvement/educational information, recommendations, transcript, and college essay(s). Please note some of these components may not be required for 2-year or trade programs. Students can start completing their Common Application the spring of junior year. Other applications can be completed the fall of senior year. See the 4-Year or 2-Year timelines for more information on timing. Students can apply to colleges using application systems or directly applying on the institution's website. There are a number of applications out there, but we are going to breakdown 3 primary ones used by students: the Common Application (Common App), Common Black College Application (CBCA), and the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Application (MNSCU).

Common Application (Common App)
Common App
The Common Application, more commonly known as the “Common App”, is how many students will apply to college. Common App is used by over 1000 schools. Students can choose to apply to participating schools without having to fill out individual applications for each institution. Students can start making a Common App account the spring of their junior year. Below is a breakdown of the different tabs included in the Common App and how to complete them.
Dashboard
Dashboard
Your dashboard will show all of the colleges you have added to your list, as well as the status of each application and deadlines. For more on the dashboard tab and the Common App in general, please reference the video below.
The College Essay Guy also created a walk-through of the 24-25 Common App. Please take a look if you have any additional questions.
My Colleges
My Colleges
The "My College" Tab houses all of the colleges you have added to your college list. Each college has different requirements that you can find my clicking on that colleges name. To add a college to this tab, use the "College Search" tab. See below for descriptions of the sub-tabs you will need to complete for this section.
NOTE: Anything that is completed in this tab before Aug 1 before your senior year, will be deleted. Common App refreshes this section every summer on August 1st.
College Information
Overview
On the main college tab you will find information about application due dates, application price, standardized testing information, and much more. Some will also state if they give additional scholarship if you apply by a certain date. Every college is different in these areas so check each college you add to your list.
Questions
Recommenders & FERPA
Overview
This section allows students to invite teachers to submit their letters of recommendation. Before students request a letter of recommendation through Common App, they MUST ask their teacher (in-person if possible), with the appropriate form. Please see the letter of recommendation page for more information on this process.
FERPA Release
Before you are able to invite anyone to write you a letter of recommendation, you will have to complete the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) release authorization process. Read through the release and follow the instructions. As you complete this section, you will be asked to waive your right to review all recommendations and supporting documents. Admissions teams ask you to waive your right as it gives the individuals completing your recommendations the ability to be honest in their letters. If you do not waive this right, your letter of recommendation may not be considered as highly in the admissions process. This process only needs to be completed once.
Inviting Recommenders
Counselor Invite
Once the FERPA release has been completed, you will be able to see what a college requires for school reports and letters of recommendation. This section allows you to invite your counselor to upload your transcripts (see the tabs below for school-specific instructions).
LNHS
All students will invite their high school counselors to this section. If you do not know who your counselor is, please visit CCR Staff page.
LOA
LPA
LSHS
For the class of 2025, you will input your assistant principal's information into the "Invite Counselor" section. You do not need to complete a letter of recommendation form or ask in-person before inputting this information. For the class of 2026 and beyond, you will input your counselor's information.
Review & Submit
Overview
This section is where you will review and submit your application. If you indicated that you are eligible for fee waivers you will not have to complete a payment to submit your application. If you are not eligible for fee waivers, you will need to pay for your application to be submitted at this stage. Remember, the application fee will be listed under the "College Information". You will need to go through this process with each college on your list.

Activities
You can add up to 10 activities in this section. These activities can include arts or music, clubs, community engagement, family responsibilities, hobbies, sports, work or volunteering, or other experiences that have been meaningful to you. Take advantage of this section by using "power words" when describing your involvement in these activities (ex. collaborated with classmates on ___ or developed a system for ____).
NOTE: Colleges will notice if you are exaggerating your commitments. Be transparent about your time commitments and participation.
See the video below for more information on the activities section.
Writing
The writing section is where you will choose your Personal Statement Prompt and input your essay. You also have the option here to write a supplemental essay about personal circumstances you feel an admissions team should know about that has affected your journey. For more information on college essays, please visit the college essay page.
Courses & Grades
This section only needs to be completed if it is required by an institution (ex. University of Minnesota Twin Cities). Here are some helpful tips for completing this section...
- You can access a copy of your unofficial transcript through Infinite Campus
- You can select multiple school transcripts to upload courses from (Ex. PSEO or College in the School Courses). Scroll down on the pop up to find "Add courses from another transcript"
- Grading Scale is A-F
- Lakeville uses a semester system
- If a class is a full year, use both semester boxes, otherwise you can leave one blank. We do not use final grades at Lakeville schools so that box can be left blank.
- Check your transcript for semester credits
NOTE: Any classes taken in 8th grade that count towards high school credit are recorded under the "Other Courses" tab. You will select your high school as the school in this section.

NOTE: You can apply for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship Program using the Common App. The award will cover the remaining funding of your tuition after applying all other institutional aid. Common Black College Application (CBCA)
CBCA
The CBCA is an application for students looking to attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). 66 HBCUs use the CBCA as their primary application method (see the list of institutions on their homepage). A student’s CBCA will be sent to all 66 schools, and within the application a student is asked to rank their top 4 schools. There is a one-time $20 fee for students to apply using this application.
Students do not need to start this application until the fall of their senior year

Minnesota State Colleges & Universities Application (MNSCU)
MNSCU
The MNSCU application allows students to apply to Minnesota state colleges that are not on the Common App. UofM TC and UofM Duluth are on the Common App and not MNSCU. The MNSCU application is free in October and allows students to apply to both 2-year and 4-year state schools. For the application to be free, you must START and SUBMIT within the month of October. You will have to pay a fee for applications started before this time.

Direct Apply
Direct Apply
You always have the option to apply directly to any institution on their website. Directly applying is no different than submitting your application through a database, it just may be more time consuming. Some examples of direct apply applications are the Golden Gopher Application through the University of Minnesota Twin Cities (UofM TC) or the North Dakota State University (NDSU) Undergraduate Application.
NOTE: The UofM TC is also listed on the Common App, but NDSU is not. Therefore NDSU will have to be applied to directly.
