AI in Education

Use of AI is governed by school district policies 506, 524, and 514.

Lakeville Area Schools is dedicated to using generative AI responsibly and ethically. In keeping with our mission, we commit to:

• LEARNER-CENTERED AI INTEGRATION
  Use AI to enhance learning experiences while maintaining meaningful, human connection in instruction. AI should empower, not replace, educators and students.
   
• ETHICAL AND RESPONSIBLE USE
  Ensure AI is used with integrity, aligned with district values and educational ethics.
   
• EQUITY AND ACCESSIBILITY FOR ALL
  Ensure all students and staff have equitable access to AI tools and the skills to use them effectively. Promote transparency, clear usage boundaries, and accountability to prevent bias, harm, or misuse.
   
• DATA PRIVACY AND SECURITY
  Prioritize protection of student and staff data when using AI tools. Protecting student and educator data is non-negotiable. AI tools must prioritize confidentiality, clarity about data usage, and give users control over their personal information.
   
• PURPOSEFUL INNOVATION AND CONTINUOUS LEARNING
  Promote thoughtful, goal-driven AI use that supports teaching, learning, and curriculum priorities. Integration should be guided by educational evidence, not tech trends, with ongoing reflection and professional development to keep AI effective and student-centered.

When learners use AI, we encourage:

• Problem Solving – Enhancing innovative thinking by using AI to explore complex questions, generate creative solutions, and support teamwork, inquiry, and data-informed decision-making through real-time feedback and research capabilities.
• Awareness – Promoting personal and global awareness by using AI to access diverse perspectives, support mental and emotional wellness through personalized tools, and understand the impact of technology on individuals and communities across cultures.
• Communication - Developing clear, responsible, and ethical communication by articulating ideas effectively—whether through AI-assisted learning tools that support writing, speaking, and digital collaboration, or through independent expression across multiple formats..
• Future Ready – Preparing students for lifelong success by incorporating AI to simulate real-world career scenarios, build financial literacy, develop work ethic, and guide students in college and career readiness through adaptive learning paths.
• Self Management – Fostering independence and responsibility by leveraging AI tools for time management, goal tracking, and digital self-regulation—empowering students to adapt, prioritize, and manage their learning in diverse situations.

Students using AI should:

• Communicate with Teachers: Discuss plans for AI use and understand assignment expectations.
• Protect Your Privacy: Never enter personal or sensitive information into AI platforms.
• Attribute and Verify: Always indicate which parts of your work involve AI and verify the accuracy of AI-generated content.
• Fact-Check and Proofread: Always review AI-generated content to verify accuracy, identify potential bias, and ensure quality before finalizing your work.
• Ethical Use in Coursework: AI-generated content is a tool—not a substitute for original work. Students must seek permission before using AI and clearly indicate any AI contributions. AI may be used to support learning—such as brainstorming, outlining, or generating ideas—but final work should reflect student understanding and critical thinking.
