AVID Program
-
AVID is supported by the Equity Services Department.
AVID, short for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a College Preparation System that closes the achievement, expectation and opportunity gaps that many students face. The AVID elective offers an academic elective class targeting students in the academic middle that have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard.
The AVID Program
- Teaches skills and behaviors for academic success
- Provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships
- Creates a positive peer group for students
- Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination
AVID's mission is an essential strategy for closing the achievement gap, making college access and success available to all students.

AVID Curriculum
-
AVID students reflect and question while mastering content rather than just repeating and memorizing. Our students work together to problem solve and to change the level of discourse in the classroom as they prepare for success. Students are taught to articulate what they don’t understand and learn how to seek out the resources they need. By teaching critical thinking, inquiry, and self-advocacy, AVID educators empower students to own their learning.
AVID’s professional learning and curriculum promote student-centric problem solving, rather than teachers delivering answers with lectures. This student-centered approach ensures that the people doing the most talking learn the most. This engages students and creates content mastery through inquiry and collaboration.
AVID secondary curriculum includes:
- Research Skills
- Research Papers
- Public Speaking
- Focused Note-Taking
- Philosophical Chairs
- Socratic Seminars
- Scholarship & Financial Aid Research
- Goal Setting
- Mission Statements
- Self Discovery & Reflection
- Character Development
- Tips for Success
- Interpersonal Relationships
- Organizational Skills & Projects
- Time Management
- Money Management
- College Readiness Skills
- College Exploration
- Career Exploration
- The Process of Getting a Job (Resume, Mock Interviews)
- Study Skills
- Community Service Projects
- Tutorials
Trained AVID Tutors lead tutorial sessions twice each week in AVID Elective classes. Tutors are excellent role models of motivated, organized, and successful people. During each tutorial session, students come prepared with questions that they need assistance answering. In a small group setting, the tutor’s role is to guide the students as they assist one another. Tutorials help students who are enrolled in rigorous coursework keep up and succeed in their college prep classes.
